Culminating Experience Assignment –
Assignment Overview – The overall goal of the MPH Culminating Experience is for you to tailor your MPH experience to meet your own professional and academic goals. The MPH Culminating Experience is an opportunity for you to work on public health projects that are of particular interest to you, potentially even within your current organization. The culminating experience should involve public health-related activities within a current employment setting or formalized internship, and an evidence-based practice review or community assessment/program evaluation. The content and activities of the Culminating Experience must be distinct from your regular work.
The intent of the Culminating Experience requirement is to engage you in activities that are aligned with your career goals, as well as activities that demonstrate the application of public health concepts and critical thinking to the your area of specialization. You are required to seek out activities that further develop your skill set and add new tools to your professional toolkit. Upon completion of the program, you will be able to provide evidence of the application of these skills to potential employers.
ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS – Reflect on what you have accomplished in the MPH academic program as it relates to your career in public health in a final paper and a presentation, following the steps outlined for each assignment part. This is a multi-part assignment, with each part due and graded at separate deadlines. See the Course Calendar for specific dates.
Part 1 – Personal/Professional Mission Statement and Core Competencies in Public Health
1. Compose a Personal/Professional Mission Statement and Integrate the 6 Tenets of Being a Public Health Ambassador into your mission statement. Address the following:

• Refer to Start with Why How Great Leaders Inspire Action TED Talk Video to help you establish and define your “why.”
• Refer to the The Five-Step Plan for Creating Personal Mission Statements to help craft your Personal/Professional Mission Statement.
• Define what each of the 6 Tenets means to you as a public health professional and leader.
• Christian-worldview, Honesty, Resiliency, Integrity, Servant-Leadership, and Transformation.

2. Review the MPH69O Public Health Survival Guide: The Culminating Experience for further details.
3. Select a Culminating Experience option from the following choices on which to focus in your mission statement:
Choice 1: Culminating Experience with Current Employment Setting or Formalized Internship
From the 6 Core Competencies in Public Health, select at least 2 core competencies and align them with your Culminating Experience. See the following examples:
Cultural Competency 1: Articulate how professional ethics and practices relate to equity and accountability in diverse community settings.
Cultural Competency 2: Describe the importance and characteristics of a sustainable, diverse public health workforce.
Leadership Competency 1: Demonstrate the 6 Tenets of being a Public Health Ambassador (Christian-worldview, Honesty, Resilient, Integrity, Servant-Leadership, &Transformation) in an evidence-based approach to public health.
i. Describe how each core competency is aligned with your selected Culminating Experience.
ii. Describe how these core competencies are integrated into your professional mission statement and/or career goals.
Align the Culminating Experience with MPH courses and key assignments/tools. See the following examples:

• MPH550 Health Services Administration: SWOT and Stakeholder Analysis.
• MPH560 Health Care Policy, Law, and Society: An Evaluation of Legal, Social, and Economic Costs of Public Health Policy.
• MPH580 Public Health, Cinema; and Social Media: Media Campaigns and Public Health Messaging.

Choice 2: Evidence-Based Practice Review
Complete an evidence-based practice review and provide an in-depth analysis of an emerging public health problem or issue.
Include a published literature review and 2-3 key informational interviews (public health professionals must include media and policy involving experts in the area of interests).
Include lessons learned and recommendations (i.e., future directions for research and/or policy development) based on the evidence-based practice review and relevant information from key informants. For example, a problem statement could address the question, “What does it mean to have a healthy eating lifestyle?”
You could start with a literature review, followed by an interview with a nutritional media expert, an executive director of a non-profit organization working to address obesity among inner-city children, and/or a professional staffer working on state or federal legislation that addresses this emerging public health issue.
From the 6 Core Competencies in Public Health (Link Available on Overview page), select at least 2 core competencies and align them with your Culminating Experience. See the following examples.
Epidemiology & Biostatistics Competency #1: Describe preferred methological alternatives to commonly used statistical methods when assumptions are not met.
Leadership Competency 1: Describe alternative strategies for collaboration and partnership among organizations focused on public health goals.
i. Describe how each core competency is aligned with your selected Culminated Experience.
ii. Describe how these core competencies are integrated into your professional mission statement and/or career goals.
Align the Culminating Experience with MPH courses and key assignments/tools. See the following examples:

Choice 3: Community Assessment or Program Evaluation
Take on a role in community assessment in collaboration with a local community agency or organization.
Focus on a specific community health concern or population.
Use information that is either publicly available or from the organization itself to provide a broad perspective of the community health concern or population and to ascertain potential factors that can be leveraged to address the concern or aid the target population.
From the 6 Core Competencies in Public Health, select at least 2 core competencies and align them with your Culminating Experience. See the following examples:
Cultural & Diversity Competency: Develop public health programs and strategies that address the diverse cultural values and traditions of the communities being served.
Leadership & Systems Thinking Competency: Promote high standards of personal and organizational integrity, compassion, honesty, and respect for all people.
Socio-Ecological & Behavior Health Core Competencies: Demonstrate effective written and oral skills for communicating with different audiences in the context of professional public health activities.
i. Describe how each core competency is aligned with your selected Culminating Experience.
ii. Describe how these core competencies are integrated into your professional mission state and/or career goals.

Part 2 – Culminating Experience Final Paper
1. Assemble your final paper to include all identified areas of your Culminating Experience:
Abstract (Overview): Provide an overview describing your Culminating Experience, and address the following:

• Key points about the who, what, when, where, why, and how of your Culminating Experience. Strong problem statement.
• Discussion of target population(s).
• Description of the public health function (agency or organization).

Introduction/Background: Provide background information of your Culminating Experience, include the following items:

• Description of public health issue.
• Discussion of history and context for health issue.
• Literature review.
• Description of the epidemiologic burden of public health issue as well as its impact on the greater population.

Methodology: Provide information regarding the methodology of your Culminating Experience, include the following items:

• Description of the population demographics.
• Additional details about the organization/agency as it relates to the Culminating Experience.
• Description of instruments/tools (i.e., surveys, etc.) that are used by the organization.
• Description of how the organization achieves its mission, vision, and goals.

Conclusions and Statement related to the Vision of the MPH Program: Summarize your Culminating Experience conclusions and your own professional outlook, including the following items:
Critical analysis of your Culminating Experience and/or accomplishments related to the Culminating Experience.
Discussion of the potential immediate and long-term of impact on the target population.
Implications of professional experience on public health practice.
Statement connecting the Culminating Experience to the Vision of the MPH Program:
a. Vision: Through a Christian worldview, educate students to strategically address the health needs of populations from the individual to the global level using a variety of health promotion and education strategies.
i. Education is competency-based in order to comply with current national efforts to improve the quality and accountability of public health training programs.

Part 3 – Culminating Experience Presentation
1. Create an online presentation of your Culminating Experience that addresses the following:

a. Who was supporting the Culminating Experience (leadership within the organization)?
b, Who had permission to perform the various Culminating Experience activities?

a. What were your goals and objectives for the Culminating Experience?
b. What problems/issues did the Culminating Experience address? Was this a knowledge gap or was it a working solution to a public health problem with a publication in mind?
When:
a. When was the Culminating Experience expected to take place and for how long?
b. When were the various time-based events, activities, etc. of the intended Culminating Experience?
Where:
a. Where is the identified agency/organization where you completed the Culminating Experience?
b. Where was the agency/organization located graphically and/or logistically and/or where were the logistical aspects of the Culminating Experience?
How:
a. How did you plan to get the most out of this experience?
Why (focus on the Why):
a. Why was the Culminating Experience pursued? Address the various drivers and/or constraints (internal and/or external) that were imposed upon the Culminating Experience.
b. Were there any aspects of your Culminating Experience that you could not complete? Why were these aspects required?
Implications of your Culminating Experience on your professional growth in the field of public health.
Identification of at least two takeaways that you gained from this experience that were career-enhancing.
Connections between the Culminating Experience and the Vision and Mission of the MPH program.
2. Use the notes pane in your presentation file to add a written script for each slide OR include a text file with your presentation notes if you did not use PowerPoint or Google Slides.
3. Use VoiceThread to incorporate a recorded narrated version of your written script into your presentation
4. Submit a PDF of your presentation with slide notes displayed to the assignment submission page by the specified deadline.
