When considering ways to adapt a lesson that uses the 5E instructional model to a more traditional lesson plan it is important to know the differences between the two. The 5E model focuses on student-led learning through exploration whereas traditional lesson plans focus on a teacher-led structure. Additionally, formal lesson plans require an anticipatory set, MMR, engagement, and expression. 5E values the five E’s- Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate (ngss.sdcoe.net, 2022). To adapt the 5E lesson into a formal lesson plan I would first consider student factors such as special needs, gifted, and early finishers as these are important factors to consider that can change the format of the lesson. Next, I would look at ways to present the lesson plan in a more traditional format while using concepts and methods from the 5E approach. Engage in like an anticipatory set but the explore, elaborate, and evaluate is where they differ from traditional lesson plans. I would use the explore, explain, and elaborate in the MMR section as well as the engagement as this is where students will be exploring the material. With student factors in mind, i plan to encourage students to explore the material and engage on their level. Each student will have different needs, so it is important to consider these when adapting a 5E lesson.
Engage is definitely an anticipatory set/do now type of activity. Evaluate could be the formative assessment that goes with the lesson. How can address differing needs of students while using this model of instruction?
