Question: Youth and rebellion are often treated as vital and synonymous experiences in young adult fiction. From dystopian landscapes to foreboding educational practices, rebellion in children’s literature is often an action young characters take to define and perhaps redefine their identities against societal expectations incongruent to their lived experiences. The Hunger Games and Children of Blood and Bone centers on a protagonist(s) that must combat and ultimately, rebel against a system of oppression, and as a result, define their values and ultimately, their identity against seemingly violent backdrops. Consider why rebellion against oppressive forces is an important space for young readers to explore their identities before adulthood. Is this perhaps a necessary stage within the developing child model? why or why not?
