In chapters of The Invisible Gorilla: How Our Intuitions Deceive Us by Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons on page 81-82 the authors state: “We treat confidence as an honest signal of a person’s professional skill, accurate memory, or expert knowledge. But…the confidence that people project, whether they are diagnosing a patient, making decisions about foreign, policy, or testifying in court, is all too often an illusion.”
Questions:
1. Do you think that the above statement is valid or not? please explain.
2. Please explain how you would apply the illusion of confidence to a situation in life? In other words would knowing that experts are sometimes overconfident when they should not be helpful for you in knowing who to trust?
3. Have you ever shown overconfidence in order to convince someone about something or gain someone’s trust?
